Support Programs for scholarship grantees

Mentoring (Intergenerational Support) Program
The Mentoring Program in which Finansbank and FİBA Group employees partner with undergraduate scholarship grantees, is operational since 2001. The Program will be run also in 2008-2009 academic year.

The big sister/big brother (mentoring) system has been long utilized in North America and Europe, very extensively and efficiently, and is being employed in Turkey by the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation. Only the grantees of the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation are eligible to participate in this program.

What Does Mentoring Entail?

Mentoring comprises the one-on-one relationship established between a volunteer adult and a young person, with the aim of fulfilling the below objectives:
  • Respond to their developmental needs,
  • Help them shape their view of their future,
  • Provide them with support, friendship, and guidance, and set an example for them.
Who is a mentor and a mentee?

In the mentoring system, the person providing the support is called a mentor, and the person receiving it is called a mentee.

Mentors look out for their mentees, share their experiences and professional knowledge with them, and establish a systematic and long-term friendship. They act as a guide, set an example, counsel them, support them on different issues—in short, they listen to their mentee and accompany them during their developmental process. Believing in the importance of this responsibility, and being prepared to bring an added value to a young person’s life are the prerequisites of becoming a mentor.
How to apply for Mentoring?

Within the context of the Mentoring Program, individuals determined by the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation are asked to fill out an application form and set aside one hour a week to support grantees as part of this program. Each volunteer receives the contact information and curriculum vitae of one Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation grantee, and is asked to get in touch with this grantee. During the program, mentors and mentees receive training, information, and support from the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation.

After the prospective mentor is given the contact information of the grantee, the Foundation monitors the mentoring process and grantees and volunteers participating in the program participate in the periodic meetings organized by the Foundation. Volunteers can contact grantees by phone or e-mail, but preferably meet them face-to-face.
