Mission

The mission of the Foundation is:

  • To support university students from disadvantaged backgrounds who show outstanding academic potential, in Turkey and abroad, for their education and individual development
  • To build schools and dormitories in regions where they are most needed, and to hand them over to Ministry of National Education
  • To build and run sport, social and healthcare facilities and promote the development of services in these fields
  • To promote Turkey’s socio-economic development through investments in fields of education, health and culture.

With the motto that “Investing in the future of a nation’s people is the most valuable kind of investment”, Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation is committed to a three-pillar strategy for challenging social, cultural and economic barriers to children’s and young people’s fulfillment of their right to education.

  • Universal primary education: Everyone has the right to education. Access to primary education is a basic instrument in the fight against poverty. The Foundation addresses the lack of adequate and physically accessible schools, which is a basic obstacle to achieving universal primary education, by building schools in Turkey’s impoverished communities suffering from low enrolment rates.

  • Reducing gender disparities in schooling is still a challenge, and the ratio of girls to boys decreases further in secondary level education. Providing housing is a crucial requirement for increasing access to secondary and higher education especially for girls from rural and disadvantaged regions. The Foundation builds secondary school girls dormitories in Turkey’s provinces with high poverty and low female secondary school enrolment rates to increase girls’ access to secondary schooling.

  • In higher levels of education students from disadvantaged backgrounds can experience financial limitations as well as adaptation problems in what is often a new city and new social context. The Foundation provides scholarships for students with outstanding academic performance and from under-resourced families, and supports them further through empowerment programs to make them agents of change in their communities.

The Foundation provides substantial support in access to healthcare for underserved or at-risk populations by building rehabilitation facilities as part of a comprehensive strategy that education and health investments should be run together to achieve sustainable development. The Foundation also invests in the conservation of cultural heritage, which serves not only to reify the past but also provide an environment for life-long education.
