Besides financial assistance, the Foundation runs Support Programs for scholarship grantees, in order to promote their individual development, enhance their life skills and build a network of communication and sharing between these students.
Support Programs for scholarship grantees are;
- Mentoring (Intergenerational Support) Program
- Internship and Part-time Employment Support Program
- Meetings with Scholarship Grantees and other organizations.
Mentoring (Intergenerational Support) Program
The Mentoring Program in which Finansbank and FİBA Group employees partner with undergraduate scholarship grantees, is operational since 2001. The Program will be run also in 2008-2009 academic year.
The big sister/big brother (mentoring) system has been long utilized in North America and Europe, very extensively and efficiently, and is being employed in Turkey by the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation. Only the grantees of the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation are eligible to participate in this program.
What Does Mentoring Entail?
Mentoring comprises the one-on-one relationship established between a volunteer adult and a young person, with the aim of fulfilling the below objectives:
- Respond to their developmental needs,
- Help them shape their view of their future,
- Provide them with support, friendship, and guidance, and set an example for them.
Who is a mentor and a mentee?
In the mentoring system, the person providing the support is called a mentor, and the person receiving it is called a mentee.
Mentors look out for their mentees, share their experiences and professional knowledge with them, and establish a systematic and long-term friendship. They act as a guide, set an example, counsel them, support them on different issues—in short, they listen to their mentee and accompany them during their developmental process. Believing in the importance of this responsibility, and being prepared to bring an added value to a young person’s life are the prerequisites of becoming a mentor.
How to apply the Mentoring Programme
Within the context of the Mentoring Program, individuals determined by the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation are asked to fill out an application form and set aside one hour a week to support grantees as part of this program. Each volunteer receives the contact information and curriculum vitae of one Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation grantee, and is asked to get in touch with this grantee. During the program, mentors and mentees receive training, information, and support from the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation.
After the prospective mentor is given the contact information of the grantee, the Foundation monitors the mentoring process and grantees and volunteers participating in the program participate in the periodic meetings organized by the Foundation. Volunteers can contact grantees by phone or e-mail, but preferably meet them face-to-face.
Internship and Part-time Employment Opportunities
The Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation sends the curriculum vitae of grantees that wish to intern or work part-time at Fiba Group to the respective Human Resources Departments. The application is assessed based on whether or not the grantee is appropriate for the department they requested, and whether or not there is a need for an intern or part-time staff member in the said department. For more information, please browse the websites for the Fiba Group of Companies.
Individual Development and Training Programs
Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation organizes training seminars addressing the needs of scholarship grantees. The Foundation is partnering with volunteer trainers and educational institutions for organizing these seminars.
The seminars include many topics such as communication, individual and Professional development, computer skills, interview techniques, CV preparation, stress and time management.
How can I participate in training seminars?
Training seminars will be announced in the web site of the Foundation, and via e-mails to scholarship recipients. The procedures for application are explained in the announcements.
Meetings with Scholarship Grantees
Since 2001, the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation organizes an “Annual Grantee Meeting” every year in Istanbul with the aim of getting all grantees to get to know one another, meet the Foundation President and other Board Members, and discuss face-to-face any questions or suggestions they may have. Meetings are announced in the web site of the Foundation, and via e-mails to scholarship recipients.
